The book, Just One Day by Gayle Forman, was not my favorite book. I thought the plot of the book was very predictable and boring. I guessed everything that was going to happen. I also found that the main character, Allyson, extremely winey and annoying. I was reading the book and I was just watching the girl isolate herself. I thought of so many solutions for this girl, but she didn't do any of them! She just pouted and isolated herself. I could not get involved in the book because I found her so annoying.
Reading this book was a lot different than reading an assigned book for class. In class in order to understand the book and to be able to go deeper in class discussion, you have to read and annotate the entire book. For this book, I didn't annotate it at all I just read it. It was a pretty transparent book so it wasn't difficult to understand, but I didn't go as deep as I could have. I did a good job at following Allyson's development and depression in the book. I noticed how when she was with Willem she was very content and happy, but then when he left she was so sad. Then throughout the rest of the book she was just trying to regain that happiness she once had by trying to find him. I didn't do a great job at tracking the theme. The theme I got from the story was that people make themselves happy, others can't do it for them. This was a decent theme, but it could have been deeper.
In the next book I read I will be sure to track the theme better. I will take better annotation notes , and that will help me understand the book better.
